Hawksbill turtle
Scientific name: Eretmochelys imbricata
Description: Hawksbill turtles live in reefs and feed mainly on sponges and invertebrates such as jellyfish. They have a sharp beak to extract food from crevices and sharp angular scutes or scales on their shell for protection. The turtle grows only to 45 inches and weighs up to 150 lbs. The hawksbill turtle is listed as an endangered species due to habitat loss and harvesting of shells and meat for consumption or use by humans.
Fun Facts: These turtles nest every 2-3 years returning to the same beach where they were born!
